Peter Flueckiger’s research explores the relationship of literary theory to political and ethical philosophy in 18th-century Japan, a period in which Japanese writers intensely pursued such questions as what constitutes the essence of human nature, how a well-ordered society can be established, and how the study and practice of literature can contribute to the cultivation and socialization of human nature. The figures he has focused on most intensively are the Confucian philosopher Ogyu Sorai (1666-1728), his disciple Dazai Shundai (1680-1747), and critics of Sorai such as Kamo no Mabuchi (1697-1769) and Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801).
