7 pm Artist Isa Carrillo and art historian and catalog essayist Mary Coffey discuss Carrillo’s explorations of Orozco’s identity through the esoteric methods of astrology and palmistry. Carrillo will also offer private palm reading sessions.
Mary Coffey is an art historian best known for her work on Mexican muralism and the politics of exhibition. Coffey received a BA from Indiana University and an MA and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her publications span the disciplines of art history, Latin American cultural studies, and museum studies. In 2012, she published How a Revolutionary Art Became Official Culture: Murals, Museums, and the Mexican State, an in-depth examination of the relationship between murals and the advent of modern museology in post-revolutionary Mexico. This study won the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Award for a distinguished book in art history. She is currently completing a manuscript on José Clemente Orozco’s Epic of American Civilization, which is located at Dartmouth College, where Coffey is an associate professor of art history.
