4:15 p.m. Poetry Reading by Palestinian-American poet Lorene Zarou-Zouzounis in Hayv Kahraman: Project Series 52
Lorene Zarou-Zouzounis is a Palestinian-American, born in Ramallah, Palestine. She emigrated to the US in 1964. Lorene is a business owner, poet, writer and human rights and peace activist, volunteering with dozens of organizations since the early 1990’s. Zarou-Zouzounis writes poetry, prose, historical fiction for children and is currently writing an historical collection of stories about her mother’s life in Palestine. Another work in progress is an anthology of poems entitled Faces, the Nine Stations of Pain & Joy.
Zarou-Zouzounis self-published a poetry chapbook in the late 1980’s, entitled Inquire Within, and is published in 12 poetry anthologies, including The Poetry of Arab Women, Food for Our Grandmothers, The Space Between our Footsteps, War After War-SF City Lights Review #5, three anthologies published by the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, and A Different Path, published by Radius of Arab-American Writers (RAWI.)
Zarou-Zouzounis earned her Associate of Arts degree from City College of San Francisco in 1982 and was published in a student anthology that spiked her interest to major in creative writing. She attended San Francisco State University (SFSU) for nearly four years and has recently returned bachelor’s degree in creative writing. It was at SFSU where she made her debut in publishing when three poems about the first Palestinian Intifada of 1987 were included in Out of the Maze, an anthology published by the Humanities & Women’s Studies Departments.
