Jeff Chang, writer, music critic, and author of Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post-Civil Rights America, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, and We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation, will unravel the cultural imaginary that has shaped his work, giving a sonic and visual journey from the roots to the aspirations of his work. Through records, video, and storytelling, he will map his formation as a subject, thinker, and activist. He will discuss the importance of sound/music as an intrinsic form of social formation as well as a tool for empathy, which he thinks of as a necessary step toward equity, justice, and freedom. Working through his book chapter in We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation and his web series episode “The In-Betweens,” Chang will also speak about the ethics of cross-racial solidarity. This performative lecture will consist of musical gems from Chang’s vinyl collection, the screening of his web series, and more.
