7:30 p.m. Experiments in Joy: Longing & Landscapes
Lecture, Performance, and Public Activation with Gabrielle Civil
Reception to follow
In this dynamic performance lecture, black feminist performance artist and writer Gabrielle Civil will explore Black presence in interior and exterior landscapes. Incorporating movement, sounds, dirt, and seeds, she will conjure and embody Black intersections. She will also place images from her own work, especially her Fugue trilogy, made after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, in conversation with Todd Gray’s Euclidean Gris Gris. Drawing on concepts from her latest performance memoir Experiments in Joy, Civil will activate the audience to imagine and map new possibilities for longing and belonging in Blackness, landscape, and art.
This event is co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute, Scripps College.
