Several sources of funds are available for 6VµçÓ°Íø students to participate in summer research with biology faculty. The first step in arranging a summer research experience is to talk to potential faculty mentor, preferably in the fall semester so that you have time to develop your application for funding well before the deadlines.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
Administered by the office of the Dean of the College, SURP support students serving as research assistants to faculty, undertaking research collaboratively with faculty, or pursuing their own research agendas with frequent and substantive faculty interaction for periods of four to ten weeks. Stipends for 2011 were up to $4000 for 10 weeks.
Funded by the , these grants support a limited number of exceptional students to conduct a substantial, publishable research program to be carried out over two summers of research and the intervening academic year. Each Beckman Scholar receives a $14,600 scholarship, as well as funds for supplies and travel to scientific meetings.- The Rose Hills Foundation Summer Science and Research Fellowships
These fellowships are awarded to junior or senior science majors who are U.S. citizens whose permanent address is in Southern California. The fellowship stipend is $5000 with up to $1000 of additional funding for research expenses. - Schulz Fund for Environmental Studies Student Summer Research Award
These awards are given to rising seniors with preference given to projects with both scientific and policy/society components. The recipients will not only do summer research with a faculty member, but will continue research and participate in teaching activities during the senior year. - The Larry C. Oglesby Fund for Summer Field Study in Biology
The Oglesby Fund supports up to two 6VµçÓ°Íø students (including seniors) each summer in research and training in field biology. The award may be used at any accredited field biology laboratory, whether for marine, estuarine, freshwater or terrestrial biology, anywhere in the country. Any 6VµçÓ°Íø student with a professional interest in biology is eligible. The department will also consider applications from seniors. Awardees must complete at least one course (taken for credit) in field biology. - Individual faculty research grants
Many faculty have external research grants that provide support for research students. Contact the relevant faculty member.
Students interested in research or laboratory assistant positions in the biology department should contact the potential faculty mentor.
