National Academy of Sciences President to Visit 6VӰ March 1-2

The Geology Department announces its 37th annual Woodford Eckis lectureship to be held on March 1 and 2. This year’s guest will be the President of the National Academy of Sciences Marcia McNutt.

An internationally known geophysicist and former editor-in-chief of the Science family of journals, McNutt is frequently quoted in regarding the role of scientific evidence and how it continues to inform critical issues.

Prior to Science, McNutt was director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and during her tenure, the USGS responded to a number of major disasters, including earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and Japan, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Under her leadership, a team of government scientists and engineers at BP headquarters in Houston helped contain the oil spill and cap the well. For her contributions, she was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard’s Meritorious Service Medal.
