Campus Safety and Law Enforcement

What is the role of campus safety on campus?

It is important for our community to understand that our campus safety staff are here to work with our community and respond to emergency situations. They are not law enforcement officers and have limited powers and authority.

When does the College rely on law enforcement?

Because the Claremont Colleges do not have sworn police as part of our campus staff, we necessarily rely on local law enforcement for support and aid when the safety of our community and the exercise of our academic mission require it.

While we recognize that calling police raises concerns for many in our community, the structure of our campus safety system requires that we have this option at our disposal.

We will continue to support the right to protest in ways that are consistent with the Claremont Colleges demonstration policy.

Damages and Vandalism During Spring 2024

What incidents occurred related to protests on campus?

During the spring 2024 semester, significant damages and vandalism occurred on Marston Quad and nearby campus areas related to the unfortunate events of the spring semester. The cleanup efforts of our 6V电影网 staff were substantial after protesters left the encampment in mid-May.

There were costly damages due to vandalism, hours of cleanup labor as well as expensive equipment replacement and repair costs.

What areas of campus were vandalized?

Staff labor and materials were needed for days during and after the encampment to remove graffiti from Bridges Auditorium, Smith Campus Center, Alexander Hall, the President鈥檚 House, Stover Walk Memorial, Marston Quad lawn and various sidewalks around the Quad.

It was an extensive process to disassemble and remove the materials from the encampment used to create and fortify layered barricades. Structural damage to the graduation structure also required special expertise and additional time to remediate. The encampment itself was replete with fire safety hazards, dangerous equipment and debris.

We cannot allow a repeat of this kind of destruction or danger on our campus.

What was discovered at the Marston Quad encampment in spring 2024?

A partial list of the site materials discovered:

  • white rental fencing was removed from the Quad and used to create an outer barrier wall
  • three large metal and seven medium barricades stolen from Harvey Mudd created an additional internal barricade
  • 10-15 pieces of the stage (300+ pounds each) were dismantled and used to create additional barricades
  • the seven-piece 鈥渨all鈥 previously located at the SCC encampment was used to create a barricade
  • certain barricades were zip-tied together at multiple points to connect them, and ropes were used to tie pallets to the barricades
  • all barricades were covered with 1-2 mil. plastic to create a barrier and block views inside
  • other materials assembled included 30-40 wooden pallets, wooden benches, bed frames and various pieces of dorm furniture
  • several cubic yards of debris including wood, metal, clothing and plastic were removed from the encampment
